Paw print with angel wings on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black paw print sits at the centre with a halo above it and feathered wings spreading out on either side. Small outlined stars are scattered around the design. The wings use grey shading and the pads are filled in solid black, with a softly blurred background of skin and carpet.

Past the ninth ring of Thessaly station, the dogs still walk the frost on the maintenance decks, and the old people say you can tell the kind ones by the prints they leave. Ada Pennock had a black-pawed spaniel called Tuck whose prints sank so deep in the rime that the cleaners swore at them. When Tuck went grey at the muzzle and stopped climbing the ladders, Ada carried him down to the freezer hatch every evening so he could look at the stars through the thin glass.

The rule on Thessaly was that a dog who died went out through the airlock with a ring of light above it, the way the reactor halo glowed when it was fed. Ada did not believe in rules like that. She believed in the weight of Tuck against her hip. But when he died in the middle of a Tuesday shift, she found his prints on the frozen floor of the hatch, filling slowly with white, and they did not run along the deck the way they always had. They went up.
Each print had feathers of frost spreading out on either side, as though something had pushed off from the metal and not come back down. Ada stood in the cold a long time with her palm flat on the glass. Then she took the ship's marker and drew seven small stars around the last print, the way the navigators mark a safe lane, because they were the only thing she could think to give him.
Years later the dock children traced those prints with their fingers and asked whether the dog was still up there. Ada always said yes, and that he was keeping the lane open for the ones coming behind.
