Dear Mags, you will not believe what Alf did at the Palais on Saturday. He came across the floor during the last waltz with his cap in his hands like a man going to the dentist, and asked Dolores Pryce if she would mind terribly if he danced with the girl in the blue frock instead. Dolores said she would not mind at all, she had been wanting to sit down since nine o'clock. I have been sitting down since nine o'clock myself, so I am not sure what the fuss was about, but Alf had a look on his face that I have only seen once before, when his mother gave him the cufflinks.

We danced the whole of the foxtrot without speaking. He smelled of Brylcreem and the cold outside, and when the band packed up he walked me as far as the tram stop and asked whether I would write to him at the depot in Chatham, because the army has him on the boats in March. I said I might. I have not decided. My mother says a sailor's letter is a long way to go on a few hours of shuffling about to Glenn Miller.
But look, Mags, he had a red heart in the middle of his knuckle where he had been scratching at the ink with a pin, the way he does when he is nervous. He says his mate Stan did it with a needle and a bottle of Indian ink on the back of the lorry, and that it will wash off in a year if I say so. I told him not to be soft. I have been looking at it all week, and I still have not said so.
