Small star tattoo on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple star or diamond motif with short radiating marks is drawn in thin black linework on the inner wrist. The hand is raised in a loose fist with the wrist and forearm in focus, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame. The stone paving and dry leaves in the background are muted brown and grey, so the black ink stands out clearly.

Hesketh has taken the sextant off you twice this week, and both times he hands it back without a word, which is worse than shouting. The Corran Lass is nineteen days out of Hull and the swell has been running long and grey from the west since the Azores, so the horizon keeps sliding out from under the glass. You have been squinting at the sun until your eyes water, and the noon figure in the log is four miles south of where the ship must be.

On the middle watch he finds you at the rail with the star tables propped against a bollard. He doesn't look at the tables. He points upward, past the foresail, to a cluster you have walked under for a fortnight without seeing. 'That's the Kite,' he says. 'Four points round an empty middle. Find the diamond and you'll never be lost on a clear night.' You find it. It is smaller than you expected, and it is only ever a guess until the clock is right.
The clock is the trouble. Its rate has crept since the cold weather, and every sight you have taken is carried forward on a number nobody trusts. So you learn the old way, with the log line, the compass card and a stub of pencil, reckoning the ship across the grey water one leg at a time. It takes the whole of the forenoon watch and most of your patience. Hesketh checks your figures without comment and then, very quietly, corrects just one of them.
On the twentieth morning the cloud tears open over a low green line that was not on your chart. Hesketh takes the pencil from your hand and draws a small diamond beside the day's position in the log, four short strokes radiating from it. 'Reckoned, not seen,' he says. 'Mark it that way and the next fool will know to trust your hand.' You stare at the little mark long after the land has come up, black and exact against the blank page.
