Three small arrow tattoos on feet
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three bare feet rest on a striped woven rug, each with a small black arrow tattoo near the ankle or top of the foot. The arrows are drawn in thin, even outlines with little or no shading, and the tattoos are shown at a similar size and angle. The toenails are painted in purple and red, and the bright rug stripes make a colourful background.

Nobody in our family ever learned to sit still on a rug, and my sister Maud was the worst of us. She'd lie on the braided rag rug in the back parlour with her heels hooked under the fringe, painting her toenails whatever colour the chemist in Hexham had left on the shelf, and she'd say the arrows were for finding each other. I thought it was nonsense. Arrows point away, I said, that's their whole trade.

The summer the lane flooded, we were stuck inside for a fortnight with the wireless and the cat. Maud took the sewing needle to the rug's loose ends, teasing out the strips of old coats and curtain, and every evening she'd tell me where the stripes ran. Red from the nursery blanket, green from Father's jumper, the lilac from a dress nobody spoke of after Easter. She said a rug was only a map of who had worn what, and you could follow a path through it if you kept your feet on the right colours.
When the water dropped, she was gone. The postcard came from a port I'd never heard of, a single line in pencil: the arrow is still pointing, keep your toes on the blue. I didn't understand until I knelt on the rug that Sunday and saw the thin blue strip running under the table, bending toward the door. I followed it with my bare feet, past the hearth and the cat and the coat hooks, and found her shoes by the step, laces tied together, waiting for me to come the rest of the way.
