The chart was still wet when Mother Ysolde pinned it to the board, and she told me to stop breathing on it. For three hundred years the Kingdom of Ceraun had sailed by the old star-book, and every captain knew the Lantern Bear by heart, but the old book had lost two stars in the flood of the Veyl river and nobody noticed until the Marrow Fleet ran onto the reef at Tallow Point.

I was fourteen and had been sent up the tower with a copper ink pot, a ruling pen and a tin of needles for pricking the paper so the dots would show when held to a lamp. Ysolde wanted the new stars inked as solid as the old ones, but she wanted the dots left faint, because dots, she said, were where sailors would have to guess. Some nights I climbed to the lantern room and counted them against the real sky, moving my finger from one to the next until the cold got into my knuckles.
On the last night of the survey the fog came in thick off the sea and I could see nothing. I laid the chart flat on the rail and held the lamp beneath it, and the pricked holes glowed like a path someone had walked before me. Down in the harbour a bell rang twice, then again, slower, as if someone below was counting too.
By morning the fleet had come home, all eleven hulls, and Ysolde signed my name beneath hers in the book without a word. She never told me which of the dots were mine. I think she wanted me to go on guessing.
