Small strawberry on the back of the neck
Traditional · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small red strawberry with green leaves on its stem sits on the back of the neck, photographed from behind with the head turned away. The strawberry has bold black outlines, flat red fill, small dark seed marks and a simple leaf cluster, with no shading beyond the flat tones. The dark background makes the red and green of the design stand out against the skin.

The strawberry patch behind Mrs Okonedo's tower block was the only green thing for three streets, and nobody had planted it. It came up through a crack in the car park the summer the lifts broke for good, a runner from somewhere nobody could name, and by June it had fruit the size of a thumb. The children on the fourth floor were told not to touch it. They touched it anyway, because the berries were red as a stop sign and sweet as sugar at the stalk.

One evening a girl called Dilys sat on the low wall with a tin of salt and waited for the caretaker to go home. She had a sister in the flats across the road who was poorly and would not eat anything grey. Dilys picked the biggest berry, a fat one with five green leaves folded over its crown like a hat, and tucked it into her collar. She meant to carry it up the stairs in her hand. The stairs were dark and she was afraid of dropping it, so she carried it on her neck, the way you carry a secret.
By the third landing the fruit had gone warm and damp against her skin. On the fifth it had stopped being a fruit and become a small red lamp she could feel glowing at the back of her head. Her sister was asleep when she got there. Dilys took the berry out, set it on the windowsill, and watched the streetlight turn it the colour of a coal. In the morning the sill was empty, and the strawberry patch in the car park had grown one berry bigger, with a little green hat on it, though nobody could say who had planted it.
