Small sun tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a sun sits on the ankle, made from a plain open circle surrounded by triangular rays and small dots. The linework is thin and even, with no shading. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus against a grey shag rug, with the leg and foot filling most of the frame.

Dear Tomas,

The snow closed the Kettle Pass on Tuesday, so the carrier left your letters at the bottom of the valley again and I had to walk down for them myself. Father says I am too stubborn for my own good, which is the kindest thing he has said since you left. The refuge hut is still standing. Above its door someone long ago cut a small sun into the lintel, a circle ringed with little triangles pointing outward and a scatter of dots beyond them, and the weather has not managed to wear it away.

I used to think it was a warning. Mother said it was a mark for travellers, to tell them the hut had a fire and a dry floor. Last week I climbed up with a bucket of lime and a brush and found the stone worn so smooth that I could barely follow the lines with my fingers. So I traced it again, slowly, the way Mother traced the Lord's Prayer on the flour sacks when the mill was shut.

When the cloud lifted on Friday, the valley below was bright, and I stood in the doorway with lime still on my palms and waited for a figure on the track. Nobody came. But the sun broke over the ridge, the light caught the lines I had made, and for a moment the triangles threw small shadows across the step. I thought of you walking into that same sun on the road to the coast.

Come home at midsummer, or send word that you will not. Either way I will keep the lintel bright.

Marta
