Small swallow tattoo on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black swallow in flight is tattooed on the side of the neck, with its wings spread and forked tail extended. The linework is thin and even, with light shading in the wings and body. The tattoo is the only colour-free element against pale skin, and blonde hair falls across the top of the frame while a hand rests in the hair at the left edge.

Dear Tomasz,

The swallows came back to the big top on Tuesday, two of them, going in and out under the lip of the canvas where the king pole meets the rigging. I counted them from the ring while Mrs Oakes was still hanging the ladder for the flying act, and I thought of you, because you always said a swallow meant the sea had let someone go home. You would have laughed at me standing there with a bucket of sawdust like a fool.
We open in Derby on Saturday with eleven people instead of thirty-four. The elephant went to a sanctuary in Wales in March, and the clowns have taken to doing the accounts in the caravan because the lion is dead and the accounts are all we have left. Gerald wants us to sell the blue wagon. I told him the wagon stays until somebody can tell me where it would go.
I keep the ticket money in the tin you painted with the ship on it. Last night it held four pounds and a button. I have been sleeping in the wardrobe trunk because the cold comes through the caravan floor, and I dream about the swallows going south without us, lifting clean over the Channel while we stay pinned to the mud.
If you come back, come by the Derby road, not the motorway. Look up before you come in. The little one with the forked tail has built under the apex where the light falls through, and she will not be moved.
Love, Nell
