The snow had filled the cutting by the time Ivo reached the hut, so he dug with the flat of the shovel until his palms split inside his gloves. Inside, his brother Tomas sat with the stove door open, counting matches into two piles on the bench.

Their mother had cut the same mark into the lintel the year they were born: two upright strokes with a bar across the top and another across the foot. She told them it was the sign of a pair who could not be parted. Tomas thought that was nonsense. He had gone down to the valley once in autumn and come back with a cough he could not shake, and he said the mountain did not care who was attached to whom.

The fever came on the third night. Ivo wrapped the stove in every blanket they owned and said he would go down for the doctor at Ferro, though the path was gone. Tomas caught his sleeve. 'You'll fall in the first gully,' he said. 'Then the pass will have two graves instead of one, and Mother will have to choose which to visit.'

Ivo went down anyway, with the lamp strapped to his chest, and at the bend below the ridge he turned to look back. The hut window was a single gold square. Above it, too small to see but known by heart, was the mark in the stone. Tomas had hung the lamp in the glass himself, so that whichever brother looked up could see the other was still there.
