Metallic geometric temporary tattoos on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Metallic gold, silver and black temporary tattoos cover the forearms and hand of a woman standing on a beach. The designs include chevron and diamond bands, a scale pattern, a braided band and a small pineapple on the hand. The fine, flat shapes sit against a backdrop of sand, sea and a pale top and denim shorts.

The smith on Halder Isle had no use for gold, so the fishwives brought her their husbands' spent coins and the foil from broken tea chests, and she beat them thin on the flat stone behind the net sheds.

Each morning she pressed a pattern onto the arm of whoever came to her first. Scales for the women who mended nets, because scales were what they pulled up all day. Chevrons for the boatmen, who wanted the edge of the waves in their wrists. A braid of three strands for the girl leaving for the mainland, so she would know the way home by touch. The sea took every pattern back at dusk, rubbing it off against the tide-line, and the island had made a custom of this: nothing stayed, and nobody minded.
The autumn a crate of tinned fruit came ashore from a wreck, Halder's youngest, Ysolde, asked for a pineapple. The smith refused. Pineapples did not grow in cold water, she said, and a thing that did not belong ought not to be kept. But Ysolde only held out her hand and waited, and in the end the smith pressed the small gold fruit into her palm, slowly, the way she had been taught.
That night the tide came in and went out, and the scales faded, the chevrons faded, and the braid frayed to nothing. The pineapple stayed on Ysolde's hand all winter. When the spring boats came back the smith saw it still there and said nothing, because by then it was the only pattern on the island the water had not taken.
