The chain had been true for eleven days, and on the twelfth the third bearing refused to close. I checked the theodolite's legs, the clamp, the lamp I had hung from the cairn so the vernier would read in the wet dark. The angle was off by forty seconds. Forty seconds is nothing to a railway and everything to a county, and I knew what it meant before I had written it down: somewhere on Harrow Fell the ground was keeping a secret from the map.

Mr Stannard, who had sent me up with a box of biscuits and no patience, wanted a neat figure by Friday. I gave him a sketch instead. Three stations made the outer triangle, and I had placed a fourth point inside it, not on any survey sheet but where the lines crossed themselves, a little below the summit cairn. When I laid the rule along both legs the inner triangle closed perfectly, as if someone had drawn it first and let us find it afterwards.

I walked to that point at dusk with a spade I did not need. Under the turf was a flat slate, and under the slate a brass pin stamped with a letter I did not recognise, and beside it a tin box holding a folded chainman's book from 1841. Its last entry was the same angle, forty seconds out, and beneath it, in a hand that shook: Measured twice. The mountain is not wrong.

I wrote my report that night with the pin on the table between the biscuits. Stannard got his neat figure. I kept the inner triangle, and I have never once let the instrument tell me it was an error.
