Small triangle on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined triangle sits on the inner wrist, with a horizontal line dividing its top point from the larger lower section. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo is centred on a plain, softly lit wrist against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pargeter left the key on the hall table every morning, never on its hook, and it was always for the room with the crooked window. You took it up without asking why. In March the sea came over the promenade in grey sheets, and nobody in Kettlestone questioned a landlady who kept the only lit window on Marrow Terrace. Your room was number three, reached by nine stairs, the sixth one groaning like a ship's timber.

On the sill you found a tide table pinned flat under a shell, and beside it a pencil drawing of a small triangle: a cap at the top, a line across it, a wider base beneath. The same shape had been drawn in the margins of every page, each one a fraction smaller than the last, as though someone were measuring how far the water had crept up the wall. When you asked at breakfast, Mrs Pargeter buttered her toast into perfect squares and said the line was the mark for the spring flood, and that the cap was the part of the cellar that stayed dry.

That night the wind dropped and the house went so quiet you could hear the cellar pump ticking. You took the lamp down the nine stairs and found the water exactly on the line, the cap above it still pale and dry. Pinned beside the steps was a sheet of paper with a row of figures in Mrs Pargeter's hand, one for every year, and beneath the last one a space. You picked up her pencil, which was already sharpened, and wrote the date, then the height of the water, and went back up to bed.
