The third bearing came in this morning, just as you said it would, though I had been sure the old church tower would hold its line from the north wall. It doesn't. From the end of Gull Steps the spire slides behind the chandlery roof, so the triangle I drew for Mr Pellow's charts has been wrong for thirty years, and nobody noticed because the fishermen only ever steered by the bell buoy.

I took the theodolite down to the breakwater at slack water and set three marks: the spire, the bell buoy, and the pin on the fish market gate. Where the lines cross inside the circle of the buoy's swing, the channel runs clear to the sandbar. Where they don't, the Perrin boy's cutter has been grounding there for two summers. I sat on a bollard with the ink drying on the page and watched the tide cover the scratch I'd made in the mud, and I thought of your hand drawing that straight line through the middle of the ring, top point to base, as if splitting a coin.

Hold to the plan. The surveyor's office wants the chart by Friday, and I'd rather it went out with your corrections than with mine. Bring the good compass when you come down on the Thursday boat, and don't let Mr Pellow tell you the spire is fixed. Nothing on this coast stays where it was put.
