Deathly Hallows symbol on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol sits on the side of a finger, showing an upward triangle with a circle inside and a vertical line through its centre. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The pale skin contrasts with the blurred purple fleece behind the hand, and the design fills only a small part of the frame.

The brass plate was already green at the edges when Mrs Ashdown handed me the key to the lamp room, and I tried not to look at the three scratches cut into its underside. Three marks, one above the other: a triangle, a ring inside it, and a line through the ring. My predecessor, a man called Tobias Quill, had scored them there the winter the Ellen Rose went down on the Skerry, and he never told anyone what they meant.

I kept the lamp going through that first November with the wick trimmed short and the glass rubbed clear every morning, as the log required. Wind came off the Atlantic like a hand shoving a door. On the eleventh night the fog came in so thick I could not see the rail from the gallery, and I climbed up to find the mechanism had seized. I sat with the oil can in my lap, listening to the foghorn bellow below, and I thought about Quill's marks until I understood them. The triangle was the rock. The ring was the light I was there to keep. The line was the thread a keeper holds onto when the sea takes everything else.

Morning came grey and ordinary. The fishing boats were back on their moorings, and I had oiled the brass until it shone. I never scratched anything of my own into the plate. Some things are better left for the next pair of hands.
