Dougie drove it. Thursday afternoons, half past four, he'd swing into the car park under the flats and the whole block would come down like pigeons off a roof. Kids in slippers. Mrs Okafor's grandson with coins held in a fist so tight they left marks in his palm. Dougie never asked who had money. He just handed them the cones and said, "Pay me when you're tall."

Dougie stood on the walkway with a tray of cones going soft and said, "Well, I'm not carrying these back down twelve floors." So he gave them away, every one, and each came with a wafer scored by diagonal lines, which Mrs Okafor said looked like the stripes on a fishing net. She sat on the top step licking her thumb and told the boy that a cone is only a cone if somebody waited for it.

Down in the car park the Bedford's tune started up again, slow and tinny, and nobody moved. We all knew it was only Dougie reversing, but we waited anyway.
