Small watercolour tree on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small tree is tattooed on the inner forearm near the wrist, with thin black lines forming bare branches and trunk. The canopy is a soft watercolour wash shading from blue at the top through purple to pink at the base. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale arm against a light wooden surface.

Dear Nell, The dray broke a wheel outside Ashford on Tuesday, so we've been stuck in Mr Pargeter's top field for four days, and I've finally finished the backdrop you asked about. The big ghost train panel was sagging, so I painted a fresh one with the lone ash by the gate, the one with no leaves since March. I gave it a sky the colour of the candyfloss stall at dusk: blue at the top where the lamps haven't reached, purple through the middle, then pink down where the sawdust smell comes up.

Mum would have said I was wasting good paint on a tree that wasn't going to come back. She'd have been right about the tree, I suppose. Pargeter says they'll have it down for firewood come winter. But the Ackroyd twins came round after tea with their chalky hands, and they asked why the branches were black when the sky was so bright. I told them sometimes a thing needs a bit of colour around it before anyone notices the shape of it.
Tomorrow we load up and head for Maidstone, and the tree will go with us, stretched on canvas inside a tent full of strangers. I keep thinking one of them will look up and see it properly, the way the twins did. Love, Tom
