Watercolour world map on a wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a small outline of world map continents, filled with loose, soft patches of blue, pink, purple and green. The edges are irregular and blended, giving a watercolour effect rather than crisp linework. It sits on the inner wrist, centred in a close crop against a pale, plain background.

The 6.42 to Carlisle is late again, and you are standing under the canopy with a paper cup of tea going cold in your hand, watching the rain blur the departure board into smears. Walter from the left luggage office shuffles out with a page torn from an old school atlas. He says it turned up in a lost property box, the continents washed to nothing by some long-ago downpour, until someone dabbed them back to life with paint.

You unfold it on the bench. The land is only outlines, the way children draw it, but inside each shape the colours have bled: a bruise of blue where Africa should be, a pink flush over Asia, green pooling along the edge of the Americas like moss on a gatepost. In places the paint has crept past the lines, so the sea looks as if it has come ashore to visit.
Walter taps the Atlantic with one stiff finger. 'My wife did that,' he says. 'Before she went off to the coast with the good umbrella. She said a map ought to look like it has been somewhere.' You ask where she went. He shrugs, and far down the line the horn sounds, low and unhurried.
You fold the page along its creases and tuck it into your coat, beside the ticket you have not yet needed. When the doors finally open, the blue of the Pacific has come off on your fingers, and you let it stay there all the way to Carlisle.
