Lavender sprig on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A slender lavender sprig runs diagonally along the forearm, with thin green stems and small purple buds clustered toward the lower end. The linework is delicate and the purple shading is soft, giving the flowers a light, painterly finish. The pale skin and muted wooden surface beneath keep the focus on the small botanical design.

I have been keeping the last of the bundle you tied for me in the spice locker, between the nutmeg and the cloves. You will laugh, but when the galley fills with fat smoke and the boys are shouting for their supper, I open the tin and the whole cramped room smells of your garden at Holt, of the hedge by the back gate where we used to hide from Mother. The buds are more grey than purple now. I rub one between finger and thumb and it still gives off that clean, cool note, as if the sea had never got into it at all.
Last Tuesday the second mate caught me at it and asked what I was doing, standing with my nose in a tin like a bloodhound. I told him I was tasting the stew. He did not believe me, but he ate two bowls and said nothing about the flour, which I count as a kindness.
I have kept one sprig back, the longest one, and I will send it to you from Callao if the captain lets us put in. Press it in a book. Tell me the hedge is still there. Tell me Mother has stopped asking after me. Your loving brother, Tom.
