Red nail polish bottle on the top of a foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo depicts a red nail polish bottle lying on its side, with a silver-capped applicator brush standing upright behind it and a single drop of red polish falling beside it. The shading uses smooth gradients and highlights to give the glass, cap and liquid a three-dimensional, photographic appearance. Bright red ink dominates against the skin tone, with grey and silver tones on the brush and the bottle shadow, and the design sits centrally on the top of the foot against a dark carpeted background.

The stock-take was meant to be finished by nine, but at half past eight I still had the nail varnish to count, and whoever had rearranged the shelf clearly thought colour order was a matter of opinion. Third from the end, lying on its side as if it had fainted, was a bottle of red that wasn't on the system. Its cap was off and the brush stood up out of the neck like a small black flag.

My mother wore that exact red to every wedding in Grimsby for thirty years. She called it Telegram, because it was the colour you'd send when something was urgent. I picked the bottle up and it was warm from the storeroom, the glass heavier than it looked. When I tipped it to read the batch code, a drop gathered on the lip, hung there for a moment like it was thinking about it, and fell onto the lino. It landed bright as a cherry, perfectly round, and I stood there with the bottle in my hand like I'd been caught at something.
Kevin came through at quarter to ten with his clipboard and his tea. He looked at the bottle, looked at the spot on the floor, and wrote something down. Shrinkage, he said. Write it off. I told him I'd pay for it. He said not to be daft, and I said I wasn't being daft, I was being specific, and he gave me a look that meant he'd be telling the girls on the till about it by Friday.
I took the bottle home in my coat pocket. It sits on my windowsill now, where the streetlamp comes through the glass and makes the red look like it's glowing from the inside. I never did get the stain out of the lino. Every morning on my way to the bus I still step around that small pink mark, the way you would around something that might still be drying.
