Bow and arrow with red heart on an arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black linework bow with an arrow nocked across it sits on the outer upper arm, with a small solid red heart hanging below the bowstring. The bow has grey shading along its curve, while the arrow and string are drawn in crisp black lines. The skin is in soft focus behind the tattoo, with a person in a white strapless top and a blurred indoor background.

Mags had been sent to the edge of Harrow Wood before the bells, carrying a bundle of ash shafts wrapped in sacking, because her uncle's knees would no longer take the hill. The fletcher's cottage sat where the last hedge gave up, and the woman who lived there, Ada Penrose, was already waiting at the gate with her hands tucked into her apron.

"You're late," Ada said, though the sun had barely cleared the oaks. She weighed one shaft against her palm and grunted. Inside, the workshop smelled of hide glue and wet bark. A bow hung from two pegs above the hearth, its grey-shaded belly darkened by years of hands, and beside it an arrow lay across the string as if someone had meant to loose it and then thought better of the day.

"Lord Ancell's men are back on the ridge," Ada said. "They want a hundred by Michaelmas. I have nine." She pressed a scrap of red wool into Mags's hand. "Tie that on the nock of every one you finish. Nobody will take them for common stock then. Only the ones I send where they're needed."

Mags tied the first knot with her tongue between her teeth. When she finished, Ada lifted the bow from its pegs, drew the string back to her cheek without a word, and let the arrow go through the open door. Mags watched it climb over the hedge and drop somewhere past the mill, where the lamps were only just being lit.
