Smile lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand grips a black Canon camera with a large lens, and the word Smile is tattooed in black script along one finger. The lettering has fine, slightly uneven linework and no shading, and the tattoo is the sharpest point of focus. The image is warm and dark in tone, with the camera body and lens filling most of the right side of the frame.

The snow had shut the Crown Hollow inn for three days, and Maud Pritchard had run out of things to photograph that weren't the window. She had her late father's Canon, its lens cap held on with a rubber band, and a single roll of film nobody in the valley had asked to see. Downstairs the coachman was arguing with the kettle.

The landlord's granddaughter, Ivy, sat by the fire peeling an orange in one long unbroken curl. Every time Maud raised the camera, the girl looked away towards the door, as if the post might still come. "Nobody smiles in photographs any more," Ivy said. "They just wait to be told they can stop."
So Maud made a bargain. She would spend one frame for every genuine smile, and the rest of the roll would go to the stranded guests. To remind herself, she wrote the word SMILE across the first finger of her left hand in ballpoint, and Ivy laughed so hard she dropped the orange.
By the third morning the roll was nearly spent and the snow had gone soft at the edges. When the shutter finally clicked, Ivy was caught mid-laugh with the peel dangling from her fingers. Maud kept that frame and no other. The last twelve exposures she left in the camera, unused, for whoever came up the road next.
