The rain has not let up since Saturday, and Mr Penhale's pitch under the iron canopy at Ferrier Street is a drowned mess of tins and tarpaulins. I promised you I would clear the lot before the council came round, but I found something in the camera bag you left behind, and I think you ought to know before I sell it on.

Inside the case, under a cracked lens cap, there was a strip of negatives wrapped in an old bus ticket. On the first frame a girl in a green coat was laughing at someone just out of shot. Someone had written on the card sleeve in biro, Smile, and underlined it twice. I know it was not your handwriting. Yours looks like a fence being knocked down.

I have kept the camera on the shelf behind the till, away from the wet. A woman came by this morning, dripping, asking for a battery for a camera exactly like it. When I said we had none, she laughed and said that was all right, she only wanted to hear the shutter. So I pressed the button for her, and it clicked, and she thanked me as though I had handed her something.

Come home when the weather turns. Bring your own batteries. We will go through the negatives together at the kitchen table.
