The fishmonger wanted his wife photographed without her teeth showing, and he said so twice while I loaded the plate. Mrs Pargeter sat very upright on my stool with her gloves folded over her handbag, looking like a woman who had been told she was about to be shot. I had worked the pier at Margate for forty years and knew that look well.

I took the word from my old master, who took it from a Frenchman with a bad chest. Before every exposure I say it once, flat, the way you'd call a dog in from the rain. Smile. Then I wait and count the breaths, and somewhere in the counting people forget to be careful. The shutter is only a clean click. The face is what I'm after.

Mrs Pargeter did not smile. She looked at my hand on the bulb, at the lens cap, at the gull that had settled on the rail behind me, and her mouth went small and sour. Then the gull walked along the rail in that stiff, indignant way they have, and she laughed out loud, a bark like a seal, and I had her.

Her husband came back the following week for the print and stood at my counter holding it like a summons. In it she was laughing with her head thrown back and her gloves slipping off her lap. He looked at it a long while. Then he paid, and asked whether I did the gulls too.
