Smiling woman in a cap with a yellow rose
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A tattooed portrait of a smiling woman wearing a backwards cap, with a long dark braid over one shoulder and a small earring visible. Below her a large yellow rose with black shading is set among olive-green leaves tipped with orange. Bold black outlines, smooth colour blending and red cheeks give it a classic neo-traditional look.

Nobody at the Ashgrove reunion knew Dana Pryce until she pulled her cap off to fan herself with it, and then the whole back table was shrieking her name over the sausage rolls. Same backwards cap, same braid thick as a bell rope down her back. She was the only girl in our year who could whistle through her fingers, and the only one who ever gave me anything for nothing.

What she gave me was a rose from the petrol station on the Bury Road, the Friday before our mocks, wrapped in a crisp packet because she had no paper. It was yellow and bruised at one edge, and she said yellow was for people who weren't going to be asked to explain themselves. I kept it pressed in my French dictionary for years. It dried flat and went the colour of weak tea, and I never once thought about throwing it out.
Over the vol-au-vents she told me the bank had turned her down twice, so she'd bought the unit on the retail park herself, and now there was a van with her name painted on the side. She asked if I still had the rose. I said it was in the dictionary, under 'rose', which made her laugh so hard the braid swung forward over her shoulder.
When the lights came up she pushed the cap back on, backwards, and held the door for me into the car park, where the rain had started and nobody had brought an umbrella.
