Smoking pipe with curling smoke design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A coloured drawing of a tobacco pipe with a red bowl, gold band and dark wooden stem, with blue smoke curling upwards in scrolled shapes. Bold black outlines define the forms, with white highlights and dotted shading on the smoke. The design sits centrally on a plain white sheet, with a cutting mat visible in the corner.

You find the pipe on the windowsill above the sink, still warm in the bowl, the shag inside burnt to a grey crust. Your father has been dead nine days. Nobody in the terrace has moved it, though somebody has boiled the kettle and filled the coal bucket and left the back door on the latch. Outside, the wheel at Hollins Colliery has stopped turning for the first time since 1911, and the village has gone quiet the way a room does when a clock is taken off the wall.

He never let you touch it. He said a pipe was a conversation a man had with himself, and a boy who interrupted would learn nothing from either. So you sat on the step while he smoked after shift, watching the smoke rise and bend against the slate roofs, and he named the shapes for you: the mare's tail, the drowned sheep, the cloud that looked like Mrs Tennant's hat. A good smoke, he said, held together until the wind took it.

Today there is no wind. You strike a match the way you once saw him do it, cupping the flame against your palm, and draw until the bowl glows red and the smoke comes out in one slow coil. It climbs past the glass and hangs over the pithead, folding back on itself into a long S, then a second loop, then breaking apart above the winding gear.

Down the lane the first shift whistle sounds for nobody. You leave the pipe burning on the sill, a thin grey flag for anyone who looks up from the road, and you go down to the gate, where the men are already standing with their caps in their hands and nothing yet to say.
