Dai Pritchard had been trying to work the wire off his finger since the morning shift, and Mrs Hollins from the chapel kept watching him over the top of the tea urn. "You'll not shift it with spit," she said. "Leave the copper to go green. It'll come away when it's ready."

The wire had come up from the number three shaft, twisted round a timber prop to mark where the men had stopped digging. Nobody was meant to take it home. Dai had pocketed it anyway, the same week a grass snake slid out of the culvert behind Tanglewood Row and coiled on the step as if it owned the place. He had wound the wire round his finger to keep his hands busy while he waited for the lamp-room man to say the roof was sound.
The roof was not sound. By the time the day shift came up, the lamp-room man had gone quiet and the wire had turned warm on Dai's knuckle, a faint pulse he could not explain. Mrs Hollins sat beside him with a flannel and a bowl of warm water and said nothing about the snake, which was still on the step at dusk, its head lifted towards the pit wheel.
He left the wire on. Some things, his mother said, you carry until the carrying is finished. In the morning he carried the bowl down to the step and set it by the culvert, and when he looked back the snake had gone, and the copper on his finger had already begun to dull.
