Swirl band tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo forms a band around one finger of a hand, made of curling swirls and scattered dots. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading. The ink sits against a warm skin tone on a dark background, with the hand filling most of the frame.

The lift on Halstead House has been broken since March, so you count the stairs instead, eleven flights with the bin bags knocking against your shins. Every rivet has a little dot of paint worn off it, and you know them by heart.

Your neighbour Dolores is waiting on the tenth floor with a tin of biscuits and a complaint about the council. She asks you to look at her boiler the way other people ask a priest to bless a car. You kneel on the lino with a torch in your teeth while the pipes knock like someone wanting to be let in, and you find the valve seized with the same brown dust that lives in the rail.
Coming back down, you stop on the ninth-floor landing and trace the swirls with your thumb, one curl after another, the way you did when you were small and your mum carried you up on her hip. The dots, you were told, were stopping places for the wind. You never believed that. You thought they were the spots the iron had been touched most.
The lift doors open on the ground floor at last, a sign taped to them saying Thank you for your patience. You walk straight past it. The stairwell smells of bleach and wet concrete, and the rail stays cold under your palm all the way down, a band that goes round and round and never quite closes.
