Snake and handshake with Trust No One lettering
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A traditional-style tattoo shows two hands clasped in a handshake, with a yellow and brown snake coiled around the wrist and biting down on the hand, and small red drops beneath the bite. Bold black outlines define the hand, cuffs and snake, with flat fills of skin tone, yellow, orange and green. The words TRUST NO ONE sit in black capitals below the design, with red strike marks through part of the lettering, and the tattoo is centred on the front of the thigh against a dark trouser leg and tiled floor.

Dear Nell, The Majestic has a new man on the door, and he shakes hands as if he is weighing your purse. Mr Tolley, Father used to call him, though nobody knew whose father. He offered Mrs Cadwallader a handshake on Tuesday and she went home with her glove torn and a bead of blood where his ring caught her. She laughed about it. I have been thinking that a laugh is the last thing a hand gives you before it bites.

You asked in your last letter whether I still dance on Saturdays. I do, though the floor has been waxed so often the boards have gone soft. Last night a sailor from the Ardent pressed a card into my palm, all grace, and I folded it into my stocking before anyone could see. Under the lamp it read only a name and a dock number. The words scratched above the bar say the same thing in plainer letters, and someone has struck through two of them since summer, so now it reads like a warning written by a drunk.
I will keep the card and my own counsel, and my partners will get the shortest dances I can manage. If you come up at Christmas, bring the blue shawl, and do not take a hand from anyone until you have seen the cuff it comes out of.
Yours in haste, Ada
