Snake tattoo wrapping around an ankle and foot

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is photographed against a dark background, with a snake tattoo coiling from the ankle over the top of the foot. The snake is rendered in black and grey with soft shading that gives the body a rounded, three-dimensional look, and its head rests near the side of the foot. The monochrome photograph has even lighting and a close framing that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ottilie, the big top came down in Carlisle on Tuesday and nobody thought to tell the snake. Mr Ferrante found Mercy curled inside the water trough at dawn, her head resting on the rim as if she were waiting for the afternoon matinee to begin. We have sold the lions to a zoo in Yorkshire and the calliope has gone to a scrapyard in Leeds, so you can imagine how the whole company feels about one slim grey serpent being the last thing left of us.

I took her out of the trough myself, wrapped her twice round my wrist the way you showed me, and walked her down to the cold field behind the lorries. She kept lifting her head towards the sound of the generator, as if she could still hear the band. Then she slid off my arm and went under the caravan steps where the ground is damp, and I stood there with my sleeve smelling of chlorine and sawdust and did not follow.

You always said the snake was the only act that never needed the crowd. I think you were right, though I wish you had said it while you were still here to hear me agree. Ferrante wants everyone packed by Friday. I have kept one lamp lit under the steps, just in case she decides to come out and take a bow.

Write soon, and give my love to the sea air in Margate.

Yours, Ruthie
