Snarling cat across the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A large cat head is shown baring its fangs, with its ears rising up the forearm and its face spanning the back of the hand. The shading is soft and detailed in black and grey, with fur texture and whiskers picked out in fine lines. The eyes are the only colour, a bright yellow-amber that draws the eye against the grey tones.

You should have shooed the cat off the ledger when the milk lorry pulled away, but it has settled on the stamp pad all morning, amber eyes fixed on the man in the grey coat who keeps asking whether the ford is open. Halden Ford is a border crossing in name only now. The river is shallow enough to wade in August, and the post has one heater, one kettle and a cat nobody has ever claimed.

The man wants his papers stamped for a crate marked lamp oil. Each time you lift the rubber stamp he makes a small impatient noise, and the cat answers with a low, wet snarl, lips peeled back over fangs like a trap springing. It walks forward on its heavy forepaws and plants one of them squarely on the corner of his permit, the corner where the forger has signed in a hand that is almost right.

You lean closer and see it too. The date is a shade too fresh, the ink sitting on top of the paper rather than in it. You say nothing. You pick up the telephone instead, and the man's easy smile goes flat. He asks what you are doing. You tell him that the ford has been closed since Tuesday, and that the sergeant in Tarrow will be very interested in lamp oil that weighs as much as a man.

When the van has been turned around and the crate is in the back of a police Land Rover, the cat yawns, stretches across your logbook and goes to sleep with its face to the window. Later the sergeant asks why you let a cat run the post. You tell him it has better eyes than either of you, and that anything that frightening deserves a warm spot on the ledger.
