Black and grey engraved-style tattoo of a cat's face with several eyes on the back of a hand.

Cat with multiple eyes on the back of a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cat's face, front on, with whiskers extending to both sides and several round eyes arranged across its forehead and cheeks. The linework is built from fine hatching and cross-hatching, giving the fur and features a dense, etched look. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the back of the hand against a plain pale background.

The cat had been watching the canal for three nights before anyone thought to ask what it wanted. Mrs Okafor from the lock-keeper's cottage said it sat on the towpath wall facing the water, never the path, and that its ears went flat whenever a barge horn sounded past Hackney Wick. Nobody liked to say the obvious thing, which was that it had more eyes than a cat should. Four of them, Mrs Okafor said, though she was a careful woman and would only swear to three in the lamplight.

It was Dev Calloway who went out to fetch it. He was a rigger on the night shift at the scrapyard, and he owned a torch, a pair of gloves and no sense of superstition whatsoever. He found the animal under the stacked pallets by the sluice gate, grey as wet slate, with its whiskers spread out like the hairline cracks in an old windscreen. When the torch caught it, all its eyes opened at once, round and patient, and they were looking at the water behind him rather than at him.

He turned around. The canal was flat and black, but something moved beneath the skin of it, slow and deliberate, like a hand smoothing a sheet. Dev understood then that the cat had not been guarding the canal. It had been counting what came up out of it, and it was waiting for the tally to come out right.

He knelt, offered his gloved hand, and felt the warm weight of its head press into his palm. The eyes closed, one after another, until only the ordinary two were left. "Right," Dev said quietly, "you can have the night off." The water went still, and the cat began to purr.
