Snarling cat head on an ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A cat's head in profile is shown mid-snarl, with its mouth open and fangs visible. The design is drawn in bold black outline with solid black areas inside the ear and mouth, plus short strokes for fur and whiskers. The skin is untinted, so the piece is shown in black ink only, against a grey wall and red boots.

The big top had three holes in its roof by October, and Mr Pellow still insisted the lamps went on at half six. I ran the wires myself. Nobody else would climb the rigging with the rain coming sideways off the Medway.

Sable was the last thing we owned that people drove out to see. She was a grey-muzzled tabby, fourteen years old, with a white ruff she'd grown over the winters at Ashford. When the ringmaster cracked his whip, she was meant to rear up on her hind legs and show the crowd her teeth, and the children would scream the way they had in better years. I'd spent a whole season teaching her that snarl with a rolled-up programme and a tin of sardines, one lip curling at a time.
The last Saturday there were eleven people on the benches and a man from the council in a parka, taking notes on a clipboard. Pellow told me to give the cat her cue. I opened the cage. Sable walked to the centre of the ring, looked up at the holes in the canvas where the stars showed through like rivets, and sat down. Her mouth stayed shut. The children didn't scream. The council man put his pen away and, for the first time all year, nobody in the tent was pretending to be anything.
Afterwards I carried her back to the van under my coat. She purred against my collarbone the whole way, a sound she had never once made in the ring.
