Snarling wolf head flash design
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A wolf's head in right-facing profile, bared teeth and open jaws, with a bright yellow eye and a red inner ear. The fur is rendered with dark grey wash and sharp, feathered yellow highlights, while bold black outlines define the features. The drawing sits centred on a plain pale background with no body part visible.

Nobody at the fair could say who had let the wolf out of the lorry, though everyone agreed it was not Eli Varrow, who slept with the key on a string round his neck and snored like a bellows. The wolf had come to the field at Halsey Common in the rain, a grey beast with a black back and a snarl that showed every tooth he had. His left ear was red as a cherry and his eye was the yellow of old candle wax, and he watched the children from behind the bars the way a magistrate watches a cheat.

Eli wanted him to dance. He had paid good money for the animal from a man in Doncaster who said he would fetch a crowd, so every evening Eli rattled a stick against the bars and shouted for the wolf to stand on his hind legs. The wolf only looked at him. He would not stand, and he would not bark, and he would not eat the sausage Eli pushed through the wire on a fork.
Then a boy called Tom Pell, who sold lemonade from a barrow, came to the cage with a toffee apple and held it out on one finger. The wolf rose, slow as a door swinging on its hinge, and the crowd drew in its breath. He did not take the apple. He lowered his great head to the boy's hand, breathed on the sticky red coating, and then turned his back on all of them.
That night the cage stood open and the wolf was gone. In the morning there was a new card nailed to the door of the ghost train, written in a careful hand, and it read only PAID IN FULL. Tom found a single yellow hair caught on the spokes of the big wheel, and beyond the field the wet grass showed prints going north towards the moor.
