Wolf head with tribal armband design

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A realistic wolf head faces left in profile, with shaded fur, a sharp eye and a dark nose. Heavy black tribal spikes and swirls curve up and around the wolf, forming a band-like composition. The piece uses black ink and soft grey shading on a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came through the Vesna checkpoint on a Tuesday, two hours after the last lorry, and it did not bother with the barrier. I was writing the snow depth on the inspection sheet when Piotr shouted from the hut that something was sitting in the middle of the road. It was grey as wet slate and it looked at us the way a magistrate looks at a man who has come to plead his case without a coat.

I walked out with the torch and the stamp, because that is what the job is, and because nobody had told me the rules for this. The wolf watched me come. Its ears were flat against a head as wide as my hand is long, and its eye had the cold, patient amber of a man reading a bill he already knows he will pay. I held out the stamp. It did not look at the stamp. It looked past my shoulder at the dark line of pines on the far slope, where the wire fence ended and the country that had no name on our map began.

I have thought about that moment more than is sensible. Piotr said later that the wolf had no papers, and I told him that was the first honest thing anyone had brought through that gate in a year. We stood there while the snow came down thin and sideways, the fur along its neck lifting and settling like a field of wheat. Then it stepped past the white line, slowly, the way you would step into cold water, and the dark swirls of the pines seemed to close around its shoulders like a band of black ink.

In the morning I found one print in the snow on my side of the barrier, the pad pressed hard into the powder. I stamped the sheet beside it, and the ink came out smudged, a little crooked, the shape of something that would not be checked again.
