Snarling wolf head on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A snarling wolf head is shown in profile, with a black fill, white linework highlights, red ears and a long red tongue. Its eyes are green and orange, and its teeth are bared. The bold outlines and flat fills sit on the upper arm, with the design filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The lamp above the checkpoint hut has been dead since Tuesday, so the guard reads your papers by the glow of his cigarette. He does not look at your face. He looks at the dog stretched across his doorway, grey and bony, and then past the wire to the ridge, where the wind makes a sound like something breathing through its teeth. Tell him the name of the village on the far side. Tell him the name of your aunt's street, which is true, because a lie is easier to carry when it has a true thing hidden inside it.

Teodor, who has walked this pass for thirty winters, warned you about the wolves that come down when the snow starts to rot. One has a green eye and one has an amber eye, he said, one for the moon and one for the debt. You laughed at him in the bus shelter at Lowerby. Now, out on the scree, a shape keeps pace with you on the far bank of the stream, its red tongue hanging over white teeth, as if it has been running all week and finds the whole business funny.

At the second cairn Teodor stops and raises a hand. The wolf is sitting in the middle of the path. It does not snarl. It waits, patient as a clerk, and you understand it is waiting for the envelope inside your coat, the one Teodor pressed on you without explanation. He says, very quietly, that you should give it up. You realise he is no longer talking about the envelope.

You take it out and hold it toward the animal. It lowers its head, takes the paper gently between its teeth, and trots back down the way you came without once looking round. Across the valley the guard's lamp flickers on, steady and green, and Teodor exhales as if he has held his breath since Lowerby. Go on, he says, shouldering his pack. Whatever you owed, you have paid in paper, and the mountain never asked for anything else.
