The roof above Mrs Okonedo's bakery in Otley held the afternoon sun longest, and by three o'clock Biscuit had claimed the warmest slope. He lay on his back with his ears spread like wet tea towels and his front paws folded over the heart-shaped cushion she had stitched from a red jumper that shrank in the wash. Below, the delivery van idled, and Terry the postman shook his head at the dog who had never once been seen standing up.

One Tuesday a herring gull with a sharp opinion of cushions landed on the ridge, eyed the stuffing peeking from one corner, and decided it was lunch. Biscuit rolled onto his belly, skidded down three tiles, and hung off the gutter by his teeth while the gull flapped away over the high street with the heart clamped in its beak. Mrs Okonedo came out with a tray of Eccles cakes, looked up, and said something Terry would not repeat in front of the vicar's wife.

The cushion was never found. The next morning, though, there was a fresh red heart on the bakery sill, cut from a scrap of felt and pinned with a single brass button. Biscuit climbed the drainpipe before anyone could stop him, rolled onto his back in the sun, and pressed the felt to his chest, keeping a sharp eye on the sky.
