The lock keeper at Hythe Bridge has seen every sort of fool bring a narrowboat through, so when the Marigold drifts a foot too far and clips the beam, you don't bark. You stand on the cabin roof in your red jumper, sunglasses pushed low, and look at the water as though you planned the whole thing. Ada knitted the jumper last winter and stencilled the words across the front with paint she swore was from the sign shop. JOE COOL, it says. Nobody has ever asked you to explain it.

Fog comes off the river at dusk, thick enough that the towpath lamps turn into smudges. Ada's father, Dennis, swears under his breath at the tiller, and the engine coughs twice and dies. Somebody has to walk the gunwale with a torch and find the bank, and it is never going to be Dennis, who has the knee, or Ada, who is nine and crying quietly into the bilge pump cover. So you go. You take the slow, unhurried steps of a dog with nowhere else to be, and you do not look down at the black water once.

The rope catches on the bollard at the third attempt. Dennis gives you a look of pure astonishment, then laughs so hard he has to sit down on the coal box. Ada wipes her face on your sleeve. Nobody says thank you, which suits you fine.

Later, when the stove is lit and the hull knocks gently against the moorings, your shadow stretches across the cabin floor the way it does under the lamp, long and sharp-edged and perfectly still. Ada puts her chin on your head and murmurs that you are the coolest thing on the whole canal. You do not disagree.
