Snoopy looking up at a red heart

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small black fine line tattoo shows Snoopy from the Peanuts comic seated and looking up towards a solid red heart floating above and to the left. The linework is thin and even, with minimal shading and the red heart as the only colour. The design sits alone on smooth skin, with the cropped frame centred on the tattoo.

Dear Moira, the bus is not coming, so I am writing this on the back of the timetable while I wait at the top of the Kirkstone road. The wind up here takes the words off the page if you are not quick. Yesterday a beagle sat on the wall by the cattle grid for four hours, never once turning his head from the bottom of the valley. The farmer's boy says he is called Dougal and belongs to nobody in particular, which I think is how dogs like it best.

Anyway, Dougal has a habit of tipping his nose up at the sky whenever a hang-glider goes over, as if he has sent it a message he is not sure will arrive. Last Tuesday a child's red balloon, shaped like a heart, snagged on the fence wire above him and bobbed there all afternoon. He looked up at it the whole time, quite calm, like a man who has been proposed to by a stranger and is considering it.

I asked the farmer's boy what Dougal was waiting for. He shrugged and said probably the next hiker with a sandwich. I don't think so. I think he is waiting for something small and bright to come back down the hill and say hello.

The bus has appeared at last, so I will post this at the shop in Glenridding. Look after yourself, and tell Kevin the spare key is still under the garden frog. Love, Pat.
