Pochacco holding a mouse on skin

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon dog Pochacco, with black ears and a white face, wearing a green shirt and holding a small brown mouse. A pink-hooded character and a red rose appear at the right edge, partly cropped. The bold black outlines are filled with flat colour and a soft green wash behind the figure, and the photo is taken close up on a limb.

You find the mouse under the bed on the second morning of the wet week, when the boarding house on the front at Scarrow has run out of hot water and Mrs Pellow has run out of patience. It is the only thing in the room that isn't damp. It sits on the lino in a pool of sunlight from the gap in the curtains, and it looks at you as if you owe it rent.

Downstairs, the dog is already at the breakfast table. Nobody booked him. He arrived with a soggy suitcase and a green jumper he refuses to take off, and he has the floppy black ears of a basset who has given up on being sensible. Mrs Pellow calls him Mr Hobbs. He answers to nothing, but he takes the mouse from your palm with great delicacy and tucks it into his shirt pocket like a train ticket.

The three of you spend the afternoon on the pier, where the gulls are unionised and the rain comes in sideways. The mouse has strong views on the arcade machines. The dog has views on everything. By four o'clock you have lost a pound to the penny falls and gained a bag of chips the size of a pillow, and the mouse has eaten most of a sausage roll that was never meant for it.

That evening the sun breaks through over the harbour wall, and the dog stands at the railing holding the mouse up to the light as if showing it the sea for the first time. Neither of them says a word. Below, the tide turns and begins, very slowly, to come back in.
