Snoopy hugging a blue shape on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A black outlined cartoon Snoopy hugs a blue shape against its chest, shown with its ears and feet outlined in black. The linework is bold and even, with flat blue colour and no shading, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame on smooth skin. The image is taken at close range with soft natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Owen, Mr Lewis has finally let the chalk dog on the Co-op wall be, and it was the first thing I looked at this morning on the walk up from the pit row. Same black outline, same ears flopping like wet dishcloths, and the same blue bundle clutched to his chest as if somebody might take it off him. Nobody in Harrow Deep agrees on what the blue thing is. Mrs Pryce says a cross, Dafydd says a folded flag, and I say it's the tin of good tea Mam kept under the stairs for funerals.

The men have been standing at the top of the lane since Monday, waiting for the gates to open or not open, and the children have taken to drawing on whatever wall they can reach. Dafydd did this one the week after Dad went down, standing on an upturned bin to reach the higher bricks. I didn't tell him the dog looked nothing like the one in the comic he used to read. I only told him it looked like it had been waiting a long time for someone to come back.

Yesterday a woman from the union hall came round with a flask and asked if I'd keep an eye on the lamp room key. I said yes. She asked whether I was all right, and I said I was holding on to something, which is what Dafydd says too. She laughed like she'd heard the same thing up and down the valley.

So I'll be home by Friday if the gates open. If they don't, I'll not take the chalk down. The dog's got a good grip on that blue thing, and I don't see why I should be the one to make him let go. Your loving sister, Nessa.
