Snow globe with aurora and the word Dreamer
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A snow globe sits at the centre, showing a rocky outcrop and green pine trees under a purple and green aurora sky with small white stars. Snowflakes and small red star shapes surround the globe, and the word DREAMER is written in black block capitals to the right. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a red stitched base give it a classic traditional look, with the colour ink dominating.

The wasps find the windfalls before you do, so you work along the grass with a bucket in one hand and your sleeve pulled over the other wrist. It is late August in the orchard, the Discovery apples are soft enough to split under your thumb, and the packing shed at the end of row nine smells of cardboard and crushed fruit. Your grandfather's old crate is stacked there with the ledgers, and beneath the ledgers, wrapped in a tea towel, you find the snow globe.

It is heavier than it looks. Through the glass the sky is a bruised purple with a green ribbon of light across it, and a grey outcrop stands among pines painted with more patience than anyone should spend on a souvenir. Someone has written DREAMER on the base in marker, the letters faded to the colour of rust. You turn it over and the glitter has settled into a crust. Outside, a tractor coughs into life two rows over, and the heat presses through the tin roof like a hand.
You hold it up to the doorway and shake it, the way a child would, and the flakes lift off the pines and drift through the aurora with no hurry at all. For a moment the shed is gone and you are standing on a ridge where it is still January, your breath showing in front of you, the apples behind you no more than a rumour. You decide to take it home. You decide to set it on the kitchen windowsill where the afternoon sun will find it.
Back in the rows the wasps are still at the fruit. You lift the bucket, tuck the tea towel under your arm, and leave the ledgers where they lie, because the snow will go on falling in there whether or not anyone is watching it.
