Flower and vine tattoo on the top of a foot
Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot with a black line tattoo of several flower heads and curling vine scrolls, which runs from the top of the foot down towards the ankle. The lines are fairly fine and uniform, with some shading inside the petals and leaves, and the design is set in black ink only. The foot fills most of the frame against an indoor background with a television and a framed picture.

The mule has already refused the second bend, so you tie its rope to a larch root and go on alone with the bulb sack knocking against your hip. The pass is called Sorrel Gate on the old maps, though nobody in Harrowbeck has used the name since the monks left. Above the snow line the vines grow thin as wire and curl over the rock as if they were writing something down.

Your grandmother told you the lilies up here only open for someone carrying a debt they did not earn. You scoffed, and she laughed and said you would see. By the cairn at the top, a vine has wound itself round three flower heads, their petals cut in sharp dark lines like ink dried on paper. Each bloom has a small curl at its throat, the way a letter's tail turns back on itself.
You kneel and count the bulbs in the sack: nine, one short of what the widow at Tallow paid for. You had meant to sell all nine at the market. Instead you dig a shallow hollow beneath the cairn and set one bulb down, pressing the soil with your thumb until the vine lifts its tendrils toward you as though to say thank you.
Going down, the rope is still there and the mule is still complaining. Behind you the flowers hold their shape against the grey. In the valley the widow opens her door, counts eight, and asks where the ninth went. You tell her the pass keeps its own accounts, and she nods like a woman who has heard that before.
