Sunflower tattoo on a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a patterned cushion, and a large sunflower is tattooed on the outer side of one foot. The yellow petals have dark outlines and shading, and the centre is dark green with a green leaf below it. The photograph is a close, slightly warm-toned phone shot with the floral fabric filling the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
You are up the ladder before the dew has lifted, picking the last of the Bramleys from the top boughs while Ruth shouts from the gate that the lorry is late again. Beyond the wall the sunflowers have gone past their best, every head on the field tilted east the way they have been all week, as if they are waiting for someone to come back over the hill.

Ruth's father planted them the year the orchard was sold off in parts. He said they would hide the fence from the road, and they did, though nobody ever asked him why a fence needed hiding. You fill the sack, knot the top, and drag it down the rungs, and your hands smell of bruised fruit and sap.
Ruth has an envelope from the agent in Hereford, offers on the lower field. She folds it into the pocket of her overalls and says the sunflowers will be ploughed in by October anyway. You say nothing. Petals are already drifting down the lane, and you know the heads will keep their faces to the sun until somebody finally cuts them.
At dusk you walk the edge of the field alone. Every head has turned west now, toward the house and toward you, and you stand between the rows until the last light leaves the yellow and the dark centres look back at you like open eyes.
