Snowflake tattoo on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical snowflake design sits on the upper forearm, drawn in thin black linework with branching arms and small inner details. The lines are clean and even, with light shading in the centre and open skin around the motif. The image is in greyscale, with a grey shirt sleeve at the top and a plain background.

Ruth had been up since five, breaking the skin of ice on the water butts in the walled garden at Hollin Park, when she found that the first hard frost had come in the night and grown its patterns across the cold frame glass. She crouched with her breath clouding the pane and counted the arms. Six, always six, though no two feathered branches were quite alike.

Her grandfather had taught her the trick of it on the scullery window when she was small. Lean close, find one branch, then follow its twin round the centre until the whole thing closed like a hand. "Nothing in it is wasted," he used to say, tapping the ice with a pencil. He had worked the estate glasshouses for forty years and kept a notebook of flakes copied from library books, each one ruled with a brass compass and labelled in his cramped capitals.
The notebook was in her coat pocket now, soft at the corners. She took it out and tried to draw what she was looking at, but her hand kept slipping. The lines wanted to run into one another at the middle, where the cold had gathered thickest. She gave up on the whole and sketched only one arm, then reflected it, then reflected that reflection until the page looked like a window someone had breathed on.
By the time the kettle started up in the potting shed, the frost had softened at its edges and begun to forget itself. Ruth pressed her thumb to the glass where the centre had been and watched the water run out along the lines, six arms and all, until there was only the pane again, clear and cold enough to see the garden through.
