Solar system and crystals on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm is photographed against green grass, with a thin line drawing of a solar system on it. Concentric elliptical orbits surround small planets in blue, pink, yellow and green, and several outlined geometric crystals in green, pink, red and purple sit around the design. The linework is fine and the ink is mostly coloured outline with little shading, arranged down the length of the arm.

The orrery had been stuck at Saturn for three days when Mrs Ashdown came up the back stairs with a tray of cold tea and a face like a shut door. Tobias didn't look round. He was holding a brass pin against the outermost track and turning the crank by a sixteenth of a turn, then back, the way his father had taught him to coax a gear that didn't want to mesh.

'The gentleman's paid for Thursday,' she said. 'He wants it working for his meeting, whatever it is they meet about.' Tobias set the pin down in the velvet tray beside the four cut stones he'd been polishing. Green, rose, a red like a blood orange under lamplight, and a violet one that had cost more than the workshop's rent for March. Each was to ride its own orbit on a fine arm, so the lamp would catch it as the wheels turned.
He'd drawn the plan on the back of an old tide chart, because the almanac was out of date and the ledger was full. Eight tracks in ink, the coloured stones set on the planets like brooches on a dress. The Earth was pale blue, cut from a piece of sea glass he'd found below the lifeboat slip. The trouble was the shadows. The lamp threw the wheels onto the crystals and made them seem to slide off their tracks by themselves.
On Thursday the gentleman came up in a wet coat and stood a long time in front of the orrery without speaking. Then he asked which stone had come from the harbour. Tobias said the blue one. The gentleman nodded, unfolded a map of the coast, and laid it flat beside the brass. 'Then the rest of it is wrong,' he said, and smiled as if that had been the point all along. Tobias started the crank. The lamp swung, the wheels turned, and for the first time the little green crystal passed straight through the shadow of the blue one without touching it.
