Orbits and coloured geometric shapes on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a solid black central circle surrounded by thin elliptical orbit lines, with small coloured dots placed on the rings like planets. Five small wireframe shapes, including cubes and pyramids, sit around the orbits in green, pink, red, purple and teal. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the arm is photographed against green grass.

The orrery had been Halvard's father's, and it was the only thing in the workshop he had not been allowed to take apart. Every evening for a month Ines came up the steep stair from the harbour to find him bent over it with a loupe in one eye, muttering about the ellipses. The brass rings were hairline thin and the planets were no bigger than peppercorns, painted in enamel that had faded to the colours of old sweets.

"It runs slow," he said, not looking up. "Always has. My father blamed the damp. I think he simply never wanted it to finish."
She set down the bread and the cold fish wrapped in newspaper and leaned over the table. The black sphere at the centre was a lacquered ball no bigger than a walnut, and around it the orbits sat at their wrong, lovely angles. Beside the dish, on a square of green baize, lay the five little crystal solids he had been carving all winter: a teal cube, a violet pyramid, a red cube, a pink spire, a green wedge. He wanted them set in the frame where the outer ring crossed the edge of the case.
"Those aren't planets," she said.
"No. They're the shapes the planets would make if they stopped to rest." He smiled at that, then frowned at the escapement. "The pyramid's crooked. Give it here."
She gave it to him. By midnight he had seated all five, and the movement began to tick, slowly, true for once. Ines watched the teal cube catch the lamp and thought that she would ask him in the morning what the shapes were for. She never did. In the morning the orrery was still ticking, and the baize was empty, and Halvard was humming in the yard as though he had solved something.
