Avengers-style A logo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a bold, stylised capital A with a sharp arrow-like notch cut into its lower right side, enclosed by an open black circle. The linework and solid fills are heavy and even, with slight grey variation in the ink. The design is centred on pale skin with fine body hair visible around it, and the photograph is taken straight on.

The sign was meant for the Co-operative's new depot on Hebden Road, and Mr Pryce wanted it finished before the council man came back on Thursday. I had the brushes laid out on yesterday's newspaper, the tin of black enamel stirred with a bent nail, and a chalk circle already scratched onto the board. Mr Pryce said a plain letter would do. My father always said a plain thing is the first thing a customer forgets.

I cut the arrow into the lower right of the A, a sharp barb pointing back toward the wheel, because the depot was where the lorries turned round and I thought that ought to be said. Mr Pryce squinted at it and said it looked like a snapped fence post. I told him to wait until the paint was dry. The circle I left open at the top, where the chalk had run thin, so the letter seemed to be stepping out of it.

The council man came on Thursday with a clipboard and said it was the only sign on the whole road that looked like someone had thought about it. Mr Pryce paid me in half-crowns and a pint of bitter at the Crown, and asked me not to mention the price to his wife.

That night I walked the long way home past the depot. The enamel had not quite set, and the rain had pooled in the notch of the arrow, so a thin bright line of water sat there, pointing the way I was going.
