Space sleeve with planets on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo covers the arm and shows several planets, including a banded orange planet, a red planet and a grey cratered moon, set against a dark sky with scattered stars and swirling nebula. The planets are shaded with smooth gradients and fine detail, giving a realistic, three-dimensional look. Colour ink dominates, with blues, teals and oranges, and the design wraps around the arm from the upper arm down to the forearm.

The lamp failed on a Tuesday, the same week my brother stopped writing letters. I climbed the one hundred and twelve steps at Gallow Head with a paraffin lantern and a tin of tide tables, and found the lens cold and the mantle split. Below me the Irish Sea was black and full of the wrong kind of wind.

My grandfather taught me the planets before he taught me knots. He pinned a chart of the solar system above the kitchen range and made me recite them in order while he peeled potatoes. Jupiter was the striped one, Mars the rust, and the Moon the pock-marked uncle who never came to supper without a fight. When the cloud came down that night I could not see the beam, but I could see Jupiter, amber bands hanging low over the water, exactly where his chart said it would be.
I sat under the dead glass with the lantern on my knee and the cloud tearing open in streaks above me. I worked the bearing from the planets and the hour from the star that rose beside them, then shouted the numbers down the stairwell to Mrs Pryce, who had the telephone at the boathouse. The Gwen Ann came in on that bearing, slow and two hours late, with all hands whole.
Next morning I wrote my grandfather a postcard, the first I had sent in years. It said only: Found the striped one. Still pointing the right way. I pinned it above the stove beside his chart, where the paper had gone soft at the corners from the steam.
