Sphynx cat in monocle and bow tie on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A hairless sphynx cat wearing a grey suit, a monocle and a spotted bow tie is shown as a portrait inside an ornate black frame with a decorative crown-like top. The cat's skin, eyes and fur shading are rendered with soft greys and smooth gradients, with yellow eyes and a coloured bow tie adding accents. The tattoo fills most of the upper arm, with the frame's dark scrollwork creating a strong outline against the skin.

The frame arrived on the Tuesday ferry, crated in straw and cursing, and the postmaster's boy swore it weighed more than the church bell. You signed for it on the quay with the wind pulling at your collar, and by the time you had it up the hill to the studio above the chandlery, the cat had already claimed the only chair with a view of the water.

Mr Ambrose Thistlewood was not a cat anyone would have chosen. Hairless as a boiled egg, creased like an old glove, he regarded the harbour with yellow eyes that had seen three owners and one shipwreck. He wore his brass monocle the way other men wear grief, constantly and with dignity. Your aunt had left him to you along with the lighthouse keeper's debts and a box of brushes that had never been washed.

You painted him for nine weeks. He would sit for exactly forty minutes, then leave, and you would find him in the window, watching the gulls pick at the fishing nets as though he were drafting a complaint about them. The grey of his skin would not sit right. Every morning you mixed it again, and every morning he shifted his weight so the light fell wrong.

On the last afternoon he stood on the sill, flicked his spotted bow tie straight with one paw, and waited. You lifted the brush. The portrait was finished before the ferry horn sounded, and when you looked up he had gone, leaving only the ornate black frame on the easel and a faint smell of starch.
