Spiked-crowned figure beneath a fiery eye

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A seated, angular figure with a spiked crown and blue torso is shown with one leg raised, set against dark spires and a glowing orange-red eye with radiating rays. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat areas of colour and some soft shading on the spires and flames. The composition is centred on the figure, with the eye and tower filling the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The beacon at Harrowmere had not been lit in forty winters, so when Tamsin climbed the iron stair with a sack of tallow and found the glass already warm, she set the sack down and did not touch it. Someone had been sitting in the lamp room. The dust on the sill was smeared in the shape of a hand, and a crown of bent nails lay on the boards beside a cold teacup.

Her grandmother had told her the old keepers called the light the Watching Eye, and that it burned red only when the sea below had something to hide. Tamsin had always thought it a tale to frighten children off the rocks. Now she looked through the thick lens at the black water and saw that every fishing boat in the bay had turned its bow the same way, towards the tower, as if it had been called.

The figure was waiting at the bottom of the stair. It had one long leg folded under it like a heron's and a face half hidden by the points of its crown. It asked her, very politely, whether she meant to light the lamp tonight. Tamsin said she did. It smiled and said that was all it had ever wanted from a keeper, a flame that could be seen from far off, and then it climbed past her, one step at a time, into the wind.

She lit the tallow. The red glow flared and swung out over the bay, and by morning the boats had all come home with empty nets and quiet crews who swore the same thing: that the sea had been lit like a coal all night, and that someone high in the tower had been watching to see who would turn back. Tamsin left the lamp burning. Somebody had to keep it.
